திரைப்படங்களுக்குத் தமிழில் பெயர் வைப்பது என்பது மிகப்பெரும் சர்ச்சையாகி, பின் வரிவிலக்கு அறிவிப்பால் இப்போதெல்லாம் தயாரிப்பாளர்கள் போட்டிபோட்டுக் கொண்டு தமிழில் பெயர் வைப்பது ஒரு புறம் இருக்கட்டும். இயக்குநர் கௌத்தம் மேனன், சூர்யாவுடனான தன் அடுத்த படம் பற்றிய அறிவிப்பை வெளியிட்டதிலிருதே எல்லோரும் “வாரணம் ஆயிரம்” பற்றிப் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். “வாரணம் என்றால் என்ன?” என்பது தான் பேச்சின் சாராம்சம். இப்படத்த்ன் தலைப்பு, “வர்ணம் என்னவோ…”, “வானரம் ஆயிரம்”, “வருணம் ஆயிரம்”, “வரணும் ஆயிரம்” என்று நண்பர்கள் நாவிலெல்லாம் பல பரிணாமங்களைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்க, பலர் ‘வாரணம்’ என்றால் என்ன என்று தெரியாமல் திகைப்பது தெரிந்ததே. அதனால், ‘சும்மா’ – வாரணம் பற்றி ஒரு சின்ன பதிவு.

‘வாரணம்’ என்றால் யானை. ‘வாரணம் ஆயிரம்’ படத்தைப் பற்றி செய்தி வெளியிடும் போதே சில ஏடுகள், அடைப்பில், “Thousand Elephants” என்று சேர்த்தே வெளியிடுகின்றன. Hmmm…. ஒரு தமிழ்ச் சொல்லின் பொருள் ஆங்கிலத்தில் சொன்னால்தான் தெரிந்துகொள்ள முடிகிறது.

இன்னும், “வாரணம் ஆயிரம்” என்ற சொற்பிரயோகம், ஆண்டாள் அருளிய ‘நாச்சியார் திருமொழி’யில் வருகிறது. திருமால் தன்னைத் திருமணம் செய்வதுபோல் தான் கண்ட கனவை ஆண்டாள் தன் தோழியர்க்குச் சொல்கிறபோது,

“வாரணம் ஆயிரம் சூழ வலம் செய்து
நாரண நம்பி நடக்கின்றான் என்றெதிர்
பூரண பொற்குடம் வைத்துப் புறமெங்கும்
தோரணம் நாட்டக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழீ நான்”

என்கிறார். திருமால், ஆயிரம் யானைகள் சூழ்ந்து வருகிறார். அதை அறிந்ததும், ஊர் மக்கள் எல்லாம், பொன்னாலான குடங்களில் நீர் நிரப்பி வைத்து, எல்லா திசைகளிலும் தோரணங்கள் கட்டி திருமாலை வரவேற்பதாக நான் கனவு கண்டேன் தோழி என்று ஆண்டாள் சொல்கிறார்.

இந்தப் பாடல், ‘கேளடி கண்மணி’ படத்தில் இளையராஜா இசையில் இசைப்பாடலாக வந்துள்ளது. இந்தச் சுட்டியைச் சொடுக்கவும்.

இயக்குநர் கௌத்தம் மேனன் தொடர்ந்து தன் படங்களுக்கு அழகிய தமிழ்ப் பெயர்கள் வைப்பது மகிழ்ச்சி. (பெயர்கள் அவரின் சொந்தக் கற்பனை அல்ல என்றாலும் அழகாக இருக்கிறது என்று ஒத்துக்கொள்ளலாம் அவரின் படப் பாடல்களும் விரசமில்லாமல், தூய பாடல்களாகவும், உணர்ந்து இரசிக்கும்படியும் இருப்பது இரட்டிப்பு மகிழ்ச்சி. கௌத்தம் படங்களுக்குப் பாடல்கள் எழுதும் கவிஞர் தாமரைக்கு ஒரு “ஓ!” போடலாம்.

The whole process took about 3 hours, and the final outcome was definitely worth the time and money spent. Hair freaks like me will sure love this place.
